Removing admin access to databases

Note  This feature is available when the Use advanced tools general setting is selected. See Using advanced tools.

You can use the Developer Utilities to remove all administrative account access from a file.

Important  Selecting this option permanently deletes from the database all account access entries that were using the Full Access privilege set. Though specific privileges can permit users to modify much of the file's schema, the only way to manage account access and perform certain tasks that require the Full Access privilege set is by returning to the original file before admin access was removed using the Developer Utilities.

To remove admin access to a database:

  1. Close all of your database files that you are going to customize.

  2. Choose Tools menu > Developer Utilities.

  3. If you have used the Developer Utilities on the same database before and saved your settings, click Load Settings.

  4. Click Add to locate the files that you want to customize.

  5. If you add multiple files, double-click a file in the list to specify the primary file.

  6. Select Developer Utilities settings as required. See Using the Developer Utilities.

  7. For Solution Options, click Specify. See Specifying options for the Developer Utilities.

  8. Select Remove admin access from files permanently and click OK.

Notes

  • When you remove admin access, users:

    • Can access the Manage Security dialog box if their account access has the Manage accounts that don't have Full Access privilege. However, users can't save changes.

    • Can access the Extended Privileges tab in Advanced Security Settings dialog box if their account access has the Manage extended privileges privilege. However, users can't save changes.

    • Can access and save changes in the Manage Database, Manage External Data Sources, Manage Containers, and Manage Custom Functions dialogs if their account access has the Manage database, data sources, containers, and custom functions privilege.

    • Can access and save changes in the Manage Custom Menus dialog if their account access has the Manage custom menus privilege.

    • Can access and save changes in Layout mode, the Manage Value Lists dialog, and the Script Workspace if the privilege set assigned to their account permits it.

    • Can't see any calculation formulas created before removal. However, the calculations still work.

    • Can't use the Developer Utilities to remove or change the encryption password for an encrypted file.
